Babar Azam moves up in ICC Test rankings

New career-high ratings for a pair of India stars following their emphatic victory over England in the third Test in Rajkot.

A host of India’s best performers during the recent third Test against England have been rewarded with big moves on the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings.

Young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his second double century of his fledgling Test career during the Rajkot contest and rose 14 spots to 15th overall and a new career-high rating on the updated rankings for Test batters.

There are now four Indian players inside the top 15 Test batters, with Jaiswal joining Virat Kohli (seventh), Rohit Sharma (12th) and Rishabh Pant (14th) near the head of proceedings as Kiwi veteran Kane Williamson continues to hold a commanding lead.

Williamson increased his advantage at the top (893 rating points) following his match-winning century in the second Test against South Africa in Hamilton, with England opener Ben Duckett (up 12 rungs to 13th), Jaiswal, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (up seven places to 34th) and South Africa’s David Bedingham (up 29 spots to 50th) among those players to make ground on the latest rankings update for batters.

Meanwhile, Joe Root descended to the fifth position with 766 rating points after registering scores of 18 and 7 in the third Test against India.

As a result, Pakistan batter Babar Azam has moved one place up to fourth spot (768) in the ICC rankings for Test batters.

The ICC Test batting rankings currently feature Steve Smith in second place with 818 points and Daryl Mitchell in third place with 780 points.
