Barcelona’s revered coach, Xavi Hernandez, has dropped a bombshell by declaring his departure at the end of the season.

The unexpected announcement follows Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat against Villarreal, marking a crucial moment in the club’s recent history.

“From June 30 I will not continue as Barca coach … as a Barca fan, I think the club needs a change of dynamic,” Xavi said in a post-match press conference.

“Thinking as a club man, I think the best thing is for me to go … I will give my all in the four months that are left, I think we can have a good season and I hope the dynamic changes.”

The La Liga clash against Villarreal held high stakes for Barcelona, who sought to maintain their title defence. However, the match took an unforeseen turn as Gerard Moreno and Ilias Akhomach led Villarreal to a commanding position. Barcelona, displaying excellence, managed to claw back with goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri, suggesting a potential comeback.

Despite their efforts, defensive lapses, notably Eric Bailly’s own goal, handed Villarreal a decisive lead. The final whistle confirmed Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat, a result that would have significant repercussions beyond the pitch.

His departure, scheduled for June 30, reflects a dual perspective – that of a devoted fan and a pragmatic club figure.

“As a Barca fan, I believe the club needs a change of dynamic. Thinking as a club man, I think the best thing is for me to go,” expressed Xavi, highlighting the necessity for a fresh approach to address the challenges facing the team.

The match against Villarreal was not without its controversies. A VAR-reviewed penalty in the dying moments heightened tensions, with Xavi vehemently criticising the decision as “a disgrace,” underscoring the emotional toll of the game.

Villarreal’s triumph over Barcelona holds significance beyond the three points. It marks their first win in five games across all competitions and represents a historic milestone for coach Marcelino, securing his first-ever triumph against Barcelona in 21 encounters.

As Barcelona navigates the aftermath of Xavi’s surprise announcement, the focus shifts to the future. The search for a new coach and a strategic shift in dynamics become paramount considerations. The legacy of Xavi, both as a player and coach, casts a long shadow over the club.
