Klay Thompson opened up about the emotional challenges of being benched during crucial moments in the wake of the Golden State Warriors’ hard-fought 109-98 victory against the Brooklyn Nets.

The post-game atmosphere in the Warriors’ locker room buzzed with elation after a commendable performance from the team’s younger players secured the win. However, amidst the celebration, Thompson’s demeanour stood out as he addressed reporters with unfiltered honesty.

“I feel great physically,” Thompson shared, lifting the curtain on the mental toll that accompanies his evolving role within the team.

This marked the second time in three games that the closing lineup excluded Klay Thompson, a significant shift for a player accustomed to being a vital part of such crucial moments. The veteran guard finished the game with eight points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field, including 0-3 from beyond the arc. 

His playing time reflected a strategic decision by Coach Steve Kerr, distributing minutes among Gui Santos, Moses Moody, and Lester Quiñones.

Thompson’s commitment to his shooting skill was evident in his post-game remarks. “Shooting, yeah. I pride myself in that stuff,” he asserted before being interrupted by Draymond Green, who interjected with a spirited defence of Thompson’s benching, drawing from his own experience in the NBA Finals.

Thompson, despite his emotional state, acknowledged the contributions of the younger players, emphasising the collective goal of securing victories. “It’s all good. These guys played great. Gui played great. BP. Jonathan. At the end of the day, winning trumps all,” he graciously admitted.

As the Warriors grapple with a challenging season, currently in 12th place in the Western Conference with a 22-25 record, Thompson’s evolving role remains a focal point of discussion.
