Charlotte Hornets point guard Kyle Lowry on Saturday agreed to a contract buyout with the team, according to Sports Illustrated (SI) citing reports by ESPN.

The buyout comes after Lowry, who was included in a trade package from the Miami Heat in January, did not make any appearances in Charlotte. 

During his 37-game stint with the Heat, which includes 35 starts through 37 games, he averaged eight points on 42% shooting.

However, Lowry’s future may already be decided as the Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly signed the veteran guard to a $2.8 million contract for the remainder of the season.

The decision to bring Lowry to the 76ers follows a busy trade deadline for Daryl Morey and the Sixers, who were involved in four trades, some of which cleared cap space.

Lowry’s move would be a homecoming for him as he is from Philadelphia and has also played as a part of Villanova’s basketball program in college.

It would also reunite Lowry with his former head coach Nick Nurse, who coached him for some time while Nurse was the coach for the Toronto Raptors.

Philadelphia’s guard department, which currently has Tyrese Maxey, De’Anthony Melton, Cameron Payne, Buddy Hield, and Kelly Oubre Jr, is expected to be bolstered by the signing of the 37-year-old athlete.

The Sixers have dropped down the Eastern Conference standings, following the injury of reigning MVP Joel Embiid.
